The city's split housing stock matters less outdoors than in. A Montford or North Asheville home may still burn wood in its original masonry firebox, but the back patio is a blank slate. South Asheville's newer builds usually have both the yard and the meter capacity for a wide modern pit without much fuss, and the meter's often close enough to keep the trench short.
