Should I get a natural gas or propane fire pit?

In Brevard, plan on propane. This is tank country — Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and the cabins around Pisgah have no gas main to tap, so the pit runs off a dedicated tank or your home's existing one. If a rare in-town lot has service we'll confirm it at your address, but propane is the working assumption here.

Tank Country, Set Up for LP

With no mains reaching most of Transylvania County, a propane pit is the norm in Brevard. LP burns hotter per unit and runs at a different pressure than natural gas, so the burner needs propane-specific orifices and a proper regulator to burn clean. Napoleon's Uptown square pit, for one, ships as an LP unit — the setup is fuel-specific by design.

Your existing house tank can often feed the pit, which saves a second tank in the yard; if it can't, we size a dedicated one to the burner. Either way, refills become part of the rhythm — worth knowing before you fall for a design, so you're not surprised in January.

Brevard's Rain Is the Real Design Constraint

Brevard sees 80-plus inches of rain a year, with a long wet season from March into June, and that water is hard on outdoor gas work. The buried line runs in outdoor-rated pipe at proper depth, fittings are corrosion-minded, and the tank and regulator get placed where standing water and runoff won't sit on them. The same moisture that spalls brick and rusts dampers around here doesn't get a shot at a properly built pit.

Permitted With Transylvania County

Running the gas line to an outdoor pit is licensed work, and we pull the Transylvania County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. We're 40 minutes southwest of the Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment of the fuel and layout at your place.

Permitted work also protects your homeowner's insurance and a future sale — unpermitted gas can quietly void both, which is a poor trade for saving a little paperwork.
