What does an annual gas fireplace service include?

A lot of Reems Creek homes went in recently with a builder-grade gas fireplace — often a Heatilator or similar practical unit — and the first annual service is the one people skip and shouldn't. Manufacturers expect yearly maintenance, and staying on schedule is part of keeping the warranty intact. On a newer sealed unit we pull the glass, clean both faces, check the gasket that seals combustion off from the room, clear the burner ports and pilot of the dust and webs a first summer leaves behind, and confirm the gas pressure is set where it belongs. Small things caught now keep a young fireplace from aging fast.
Old downtown fireboxes are a different animal
Closer to downtown Weaverville, the original masonry fireboxes tend to be inefficient and often have a gas-log set added in. There the work shifts: we confirm a vented set's damper is clamped open the way it must be, look over the old flue liner, and watch how the unit vents in a firebox that was never built for it. This is natural-gas territory along the mains, so we verify pressure at the valve and inspect the flex connector and shutoff.
