Where does a propane tank go on a steep mountain lot, and can the delivery truck reach it?
Marshall is about as steep as our lots get — homes stacked against the mountainside and a downtown built into the grade — so here truck access, more than anything, decides where a propane tank goes. It lands where a bulk truck can safely reach it with a hose, usually up near the road, and we run buried line down to the house. Setbacks still apply.
When the lot is a hillside
The homes around Marshall cling to steep ground above the French Broad gorge, and the narrow downtown is built right into the mountainside. On terrain like that, the flat, firm, reachable spot for a heavy propane truck is almost always up by the road — trying to put a tank down beside a house perched on a slope usually leaves the driver with no safe place to park and no way to get a hose to it, especially on cold damp mornings when the grade is slick. So the tank goes where the truck can reach, and the gas comes down to the house from there.
The buried run down the grade
From an uphill tank we run buried, outdoor-rated line down to the fireplace, sized for the distance and the drop — routine, permitted gas-piping work that gets pressure-tested before it's covered. Code clearances from the structure and lot line are honored within whatever the site allows, and on truly tight lots that planning is exactly why you want a licensed gas contractor walking it, not guessing after the tank's already set.
