Maggie Valley, North Carolina

Who should I call about a suspected gas leak — the gas company or a fireplace technician?

In Maggie Valley, there's no natural-gas utility to call — the town runs on propane — so an active gas smell means your propane supplier's emergency line, or 911, placed from outside the cabin. They shut the tank off at no charge. Then finding and repairing the leak is licensed gas-contractor work, and that's us.

Propane-only means one clear emergency number

At 3,000-plus feet, Maggie Valley is propane country top to bottom — Soco Road, Jonathan Creek, Dellwood, all of it. That simplifies the emergency call: there's no gas utility, so if anyone smells gas, they get out without touching switches and dial your propane supplier's 24-hour line from outside, or 911. The supplier responds any hour, sweeps the area, and shuts the tank down free. A fireplace company can't do that part — we don't control the tank.

Vacation rentals: post the number where a guest can find it

So many hearths here sit idle for weeks and then have to light on demand for guests — and guests won't know who to call. If you own a rental, put the propane supplier's emergency number and ours somewhere obvious, because the person who smells gas may not be you. Once the tank is shut and safe, the leak on your side is licensed gas-contractor work under state law. We trace it, hold the run under test pressure, repair, retest, and relight — and pull the Haywood County permit when the scope calls for it.

Worth a pre-season check at this elevation
