Can gas logs be installed in any existing fireplace?
Around Mars Hill, fuel comes first: the university-area rentals may sit on natural gas, but the rural Spring Creek and Gabriels Creek valleys largely run on propane or wood. A vented log set is spec'd for whichever you've got. And the fireplace still has to be a real, sound wood-burner with a working flue — we confirm that before quoting.
Two fuel worlds in one town
Mars Hill is genuinely split, so we settle fuel before anything else. Closer to the university you'll find natural gas and a lot of rental housing that leans toward easy, flip-a-switch gas fireplaces. Head out into the Spring Creek or Gabriels Creek valleys and it's propane country, with plenty of wood heat still in daily use. A Real Fyre vented set can burn on either fuel, but it has to be ordered for the right one — a natural-gas set run on propane, or the reverse, burns dirty and soots the logs. We nail that down first, and whichever it is, connecting the fuel is licensed gas work we run, permit, and pressure-test — not something a showroom or handyman can legally do.
The firebox has to earn it — Madison County permit
Whichever fuel, vented logs belong only in a true wood-burning fireplace: solid firebox, intact chimney, a damper that works and holds open for the exhaust. A decorative recess or an unrated prefab box doesn't qualify, and we read the unit rather than trust the look. Mars Hill also sits at a colder elevation than Asheville, so if you're after heat rather than just a flame, know that vented logs are ambiance-first — most of their warmth climbs the flue, and a sealed insert holds far more of it in the room.
