Can gas logs be installed in any existing fireplace?
Marshall adds a physics problem to the usual answer. Vented gas logs need a fireplace that drafts reliably — pulls exhaust up and out — and the steep hillside lots and French Broad gorge here make draft trickier than on flat ground. A sound masonry fireplace that drafts well takes vented logs fine. One that downdrafts doesn't, until it's fixed.
Draft is the make-or-break here
Marshall's homes cling to steep hillsides, and the downtown buildings press right against the mountainside above the French Broad gorge. Terrain like that — tall ridges, tight lots, cool damp air sliding downhill — is exactly what causes downdrafts, where cold air sits in the chimney like a plug and pushes exhaust back into the room. Vented logs vent up that flue with the damper open, so they only work in a fireplace that drafts properly. If yours backs up, a log set makes it worse, not better.
Mixed fuel, tight access
Marshall is mixed-fuel — some natural gas, plenty of propane on the outlying properties toward Walnut and Hot Springs — so we confirm which before ordering a Real Fyre set, since the orifices differ. The steep, limited-access lots also shape the job: routing a gas line and reaching a hillside firebox takes planning, and connecting that fuel is licensed gas work no showroom or handyman can legally do. We inspect the firebox, damper, and draft, then pull the permit with Madison County and meet the inspector. Marshall is about 25 minutes north of our Asheville showroom.
