Can I buy a fireplace online and hire a local dealer to install it?
Usually no — most reputable installers, us included, won't install a firebox you bought online. Without the dealer relationship we can't validate the model, the warranty, or the venting kit, and if something's wrong we own the liability with none of the manufacturer backing. We'd rather sell and install as one accountable job.
The short version, and why
We get this call weekly — someone found a firebox cheaper online and wants us to just install it. Almost every reputable installer says no, and here's the honest reason: when we don't sell the unit, we can't confirm it's the right model for your venting, that it arrived complete and undamaged, or that its warranty survives a non-dealer sale. If it fails on a cold January night in Weaverville, the manufacturer points at the online seller and we're left owning a callback on a unit we made no margin on.
The warranty trap
Most hearth manufacturers tie full coverage to two things: purchase through an authorized dealer and installation by a qualified pro. Buy online and you can void or gut the warranty before the box is even open. Then if the valve or ignition module fails, you're paying full freight for the part and the labor — often erasing whatever you 'saved.'

When we might make an exception
Occasionally a homeowner already owns a unit — inherited with the house, or bought before they knew the rules. We won't leave you stranded: we'll inspect what you have, tell you honestly whether it's safe and code-legal for your space, and quote the licensed gas work either way. What we won't do is warranty a firebox we can't verify. In North Carolina the gas line is licensed work no matter where the box came from, so you'll be calling a pro to connect it regardless — and we're glad to be that pro.
