Propane burns hotter per unit than natural gas and needs different orifices and pressures. A fireplace grabbed off a big-box shelf is usually set up for natural gas; put it on an LP tank without the right conversion and you get soot, a poor flame, and wasted fuel. Getting it right is licensed work — connecting the regulator, sizing the line, setting the appliance.
