Steep Lots Decide More Than Fuel

Marshall's defining trait is its terrain — homes climbing steep hillsides with limited access, and a revitalized downtown of narrow, multi-story buildings built hard against the mountain. That shapes an outdoor fire feature as much as fuel does: where a tank can sit safely, how a buried line can be routed down a slope, and where the pit itself has stable, level footing. We plan that before anything else.

On a tight lot, a propane tank's placement is a real puzzle — it has to meet clearances, stay accessible for refills, and not eat the only usable patio space you've got. Natural gas, where the main reaches, sidesteps the tank entirely, which on a cramped Marshall lot is sometimes reason enough to prefer it.

Gorge Air Runs Cool and Damp

The French Broad gorge brings cool, damp evenings much of the year — good news for how often you'll actually use a pit, less good for gas hardware left exposed to that moisture. We set the line in outdoor-rated pipe and place the regulator and fittings out of standing damp, so the same air that makes the fire welcome doesn't quietly corrode the connections.

Propane, where it's the answer, burns hotter per unit and needs its own orifices and regulator, so we set the pit up for your fuel rather than hoping a generic burner behaves.
