Mills River's open valley and big lots are made for outdoor living, and the smart move is to plan a gas fire pit in late spring, before the entertaining season lands. Getting the line trenched and the burner set while the weather's easy means the pit is ready when you want it in fall — not waiting on an install when the first cool evenings arrive and everyone's booked.

Room is the luxury out here. Large properties give you options a cramped in-town lot doesn't — where to place the pit relative to the house, the tank, and the prevailing breeze — and that placement does as much for comfort as the burner size. We'd rather site it right than just drop it wherever's closest to the gas.

Propane Done Right on a Rural Lot

Since most of Mills River is on propane, the pit is an LP appliance — it burns hotter per unit and runs at a different pressure than natural gas, so it needs propane-specific orifices and a proper regulator, or you get soot and a lazy yellow flame. Your home's existing tank can often feed it, saving a second tank in the yard; if not, we size a dedicated one to the pit.
