Trenching once, during construction, is cheaper and cleaner than cutting into a finished landscape later — worth deciding early with your builder.

Downtown's older homes are the flip side. Many still have inefficient original masonry fireboxes indoors, but the back yard is open ground, and tapping the same natural-gas main that serves the house makes the pit a simple add. Either way, gas off the main is the lowest cost per BTU and never needs a refill.

If your lot sits past the main, don't worry — a dedicated propane tank sized to the burner does the same job, set up with LP orifices and its own regulator so it burns clean.
