Vented vs ventless gas logs — which should I buy?
In Asheville it comes down to which Asheville you live in. In a drafty Montford or North Asheville home with a sound original flue, either style works — ventless for real heat, vented for the wood-fire look. In a tight new South Asheville build, ventless moisture shows up as window fog, so we lean vented or a sealed direct-vent.
Two housing eras, one flip of a decision
Montford and North Asheville are full of original masonry fireplaces built to breathe — open flues, loose old windows, plenty of air exchange. In a house like that a vent-free set behaves the way it should: the moisture it adds dissipates, and with the damper closed nearly all its warmth stays in the room on a 20-something-degree spring night. The catch is the flue itself. Vented logs need it to actually draft, and a lot of these century-old chimneys have cracked liners or a damper rusted half-shut — a repair conversation before it's a log conversation.
Why South Asheville tips the other way
The newer builds off Long Shoals and Mills Gap are sealed tight for efficiency, and that changes the math. Ventless adds humidity a tight house can't shed, so you see it as condensation on the glass. In those homes we usually steer toward a vented Real Fyre set for pure ambiance, or, if you want dependable heat, a sealed direct-vent unit that vents combustion straight out a sidewall.
