Vented vs ventless gas logs — which should I buy?

Vented logs need a flue that still drafts and seals, and many don't anymore. Ventless skips the chimney and heats hard, but adds moisture in an already-damp valley — so we size it carefully.
Dated ranch fireboxes, ready for an upgrade
Clyde's ranch-style homes came with fireplaces that have simply aged out — inefficient, tired, often barely used. That makes it a natural spot for the vented-versus-ventless conversation to widen into an insert conversation. A sealed gas insert slides into the existing masonry with a proper liner and turns a heat-loser into a real heater, commonly 70 percent efficient or better. If you'd rather keep it simple and love the look, a vented log set gives you the wood-fire flame; if you want the room warm, ventless or an insert gets you there.
The valley damp is the catch

For vented logs, that's the whole ballgame — they're only safe over a flue that still drafts and seals, and around here that has to be checked, not assumed. Ventless removes the chimney from the equation, which is tempting, but it adds humidity to a house already fighting moisture, so in a snug room we may point you to a sealed direct-vent that heats without touching your indoor air.
