What size fireplace or stove do I need to heat a basement?
In Arden, plenty of basements and lower levels still have a tired open masonry fireplace that pulls heat out of the room instead of adding it. Size a replacement at roughly 20 BTU per square foot, more for below-grade cold — 30,000 to 40,000 for a finished 1,000 feet — and the sealed insert that fits it turns a draft into a real heater.
Turning a Royal Pines draft into heat
The 1980s and 90s homes around Skyland and Royal Pines are full of open fireboxes that are net heat losers — worse still in a basement, which is the coldest floor to begin with. Dropping a sealed gas insert into that masonry, with a correctly sized liner, or installing a direct-vent unit, keeps the heat in the room where you actually are. Arden sits on the natural-gas main, so the fuel side is simple.
We size the finished space — high ceilings and exposed foundation walls push the number into the upper 30,000s in BTU.
Lining, venting, and the below-grade catch
An insert into an existing chimney needs a properly sized liner; a fresh direct-vent unit skips the chimney and vents out a sidewall. Either way, below grade the exhaust must terminate at the right height above the ground, and a buried wall limits where that can happen — sometimes a power-vent solves a stubborn run. A wood stove is on the table only where a full Class A chimney can rise straight up and out.
We look at the whole room, not just the tape, before recommending a unit.
Permit, and heat when the power quits
Running or connecting gas is licensed work in North Carolina — we pull the Buncombe County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. And a gas unit with millivolt or battery-backup ignition keeps that lower level warm during an outage, unlike an open fire that mostly warms the chimney. We're 15 minutes south. Call (828) 545-0525.
