A sealed direct-vent gas unit, like a Napoleon Ascent 36 or a Heatilator Novus, delivers controllable heat to the lowest floor. Natural gas reaches the subdivisions, while the more rural stretches toward Pisgah Highway run on propane, which we set up with the correct orifices and pressures.

Hominy Valley's natural bowl can trap air, which is a real argument for a sealed, clean-burning appliance rather than an open fire in a below-grade room. Direct-vent units draw combustion air from outside and send all their exhaust back out, keeping the basement's air clean — and they vent out a sidewall at the proper height above the ground, no chimney required. A buried wall limits where that termination goes; a power-vent covers a long run.
