The single-story ranch builds around Clyde often have an original firebox that was never much of a heater, and in a finished basement that shortfall shows. A sealed gas insert with a correctly sized liner, or a fresh direct-vent unit, turns that space into a room you actually use in winter. The cleaner route is usually a sealed direct-vent unit that skips the chimney and vents out a sidewall — terminating at the proper height above the ground, which a partly buried wall makes its own puzzle. A power-vent handles a long run; a wood stove needs a Class A chimney straight up.
