When cold air pools in the Swannanoa Valley and sits under a temperature inversion, the lowest floor of the house feels it first. That's why we nudge basement BTU up past the flat 20-per-foot baseline — figure the top of the 30,000-to-40,000 range for a finished thousand feet, more if the ceiling's high or several foundation walls face outside. Getting exhaust out below grade

Black Mountain sits on the natural-gas main, so fuel isn't the obstacle — venting is. A basement wall that's partly buried limits where a vent can leave the house, and it still has to terminate at the correct height above the ground. Direct-vent gas solves most of these: sealed combustion, a coaxial pipe out an exposed sidewall, no chimney needed. A longer run may call for a power-vent; a wood stove needs a full Class A chimney straight up and out.
