What size fireplace or stove do I need to heat a basement?

Flood-damaged gas gets inspected, not assumed

Basements take on water first, and a gas appliance or line that's been submerged can't just be relit — regulators, valves, and connections that saw floodwater have to be checked and often replaced. We inspect the whole below-grade gas picture before we size anything new, because a compromised connection is exactly what you don't want in the lowest room of the house. Elevating a new unit and its controls above past flood lines is part of the plan here.

Once it's safe, we size to the room: 30,000 to 40,000 BTU for a cold, finished thousand feet.

Damp valley air, dampers, and venting

Canton's valley floor holds morning fog and dampness that rust dampers and chimney caps earlier than most owners expect, so if your basement plan relies on an old flue, expect to reline or replace hardware. Often the cleaner path skips the chimney: a sealed direct-vent gas unit vents out a sidewall, terminating at the right height above grade and above any flood risk.
