Why won't my propane fireplace light after the tank ran empty and was refilled?
Most of Arden — Skyland, Royal Pines, the homes along Hendersonville Road — runs on the natural-gas main, so you never run a tank dry and never see this. The empty-tank relight is a propane matter for the outlying properties toward Avery Creek and beyond, where a refilled tank clicks without flame from air in the line and a regulator safety locked out on reconnection.
Gas-main Arden versus propane's edges
The established 1980s and 90s neighborhoods here, plus the Biltmore Park retail and office spaces, largely sit on gas mains — no tank, no empty-tank problem. Propane lives on the more rural fringes, out toward Avery Creek and Glenn Bridge, and that is where a dry tank starts the cycle: air is drawn into the gas line behind the last propane, so the pilot clicks against that pocket until the line is purged and clean fuel finally reaches the burner. Skyland and Royal Pines buyers can assume propane and be wrong, or the reverse, so it is worth confirming which you are on.
The regulator side of it
Even after a fill, the fireplace can stay dark because the regulator's excess-flow safety saw the rush of gas when the emptied tank was reconnected and took it for a leak. It clamps down and starves the appliance no matter how full the tank reads. Resetting it is a specific procedure done in order — not a knob to force — and doing it wrong defeats a safety that is there to protect the home.
Drafty hearths, and the fix
