A Lit Fireplace Tells You What a Photo Can't
A spec sheet lists BTUs and dimensions; it can't show you how a fire actually looks in the room. Flame height, the way the logs glow and char, the color and movement of the flame, how heat rolls off the glass — those only register in person.

Burning displays are especially useful when you're torn between technologies. A vented gas log throws a tall, realistic yellow flame — the closest gas comes to a real wood fire — while a direct-vent unit trades some of that drama for sealed, efficient heat behind glass.
A Dimplex electric shows you the most convincing electric flame on the market, but standing in front of it also makes honest what electric can't do: it's supplemental warmth, and it goes dark in a power outage. Seeing them running next to each other settles debates that no amount of online reading will.
