Vented vs ventless gas logs — which should I buy?
In Marshall, terrain drives the decision. On these steep hillside lots and in the narrow downtown built against the mountainside, running a proper chimney and getting it to draft is genuinely hard — so vented logs, which live or die on flue draft, are often the tougher path. A sealed direct-vent unit vents out a sidewall and sidesteps that, and ventless skips the chimney too.
Why draft is the sticking point here
Marshall's homes cling to the hillsides above the French Broad, and the gorge's cool, damp evening air plus tight, multi-story lots make chimney routing a puzzle — short runs, offsets, and downdrafts that a straight, tall flue would avoid. Vented gas logs need that flue to pull cleanly every time; where draft is marginal, they can spill and soot. So on a lot of Marshall houses the honest recommendation isn't about looks versus heat at all — it's about whether the chimney can do its job.
The two setups that don't fight the site
When the chimney's a problem, sealed appliances win. A direct-vent unit pulls combustion air in and pushes exhaust out through one short coaxial pipe in a sidewall — no tall chimney, no draft gamble — and keeps the room's air clean. Ventless goes a step further and needs no vent at all, banking all its heat in the room, which is a real advantage in a cold gorge, provided the room clears its Btu limit and it's never a bedroom or bath. If your flue is one of the sound ones and you want the wood-fire look, vented is still on the table.
Fuel and the licensed line
Marshall is mixed — natural gas in spots, propane out the hollows — and propane needs its own orifice and pressure to burn clean.
