Vented vs ventless gas logs — which should I buy?

In Mills River, fuel comes first: many of these rural large-lot homes run on propane, which burns hotter and needs its own orifice and pressure for either log style. From there it's the usual split — ventless if you want the room to actually warm up, vented if you want the tall wood-fire flame and your chimney drafts clean.

Propane sets the ground rules

Out across the Mills River and Horse Shoe farmland, you're often past the natural-gas main and on a propane tank — and propane isn't just natural gas by another name. It carries more energy per cubic foot, burns hotter, and demands different orifices and manifold pressure; a log set piped for the wrong fuel runs sooty and dirties the glass fast. We set the burner up correctly for LP, handle the regulator and appliance side, and coordinate the tank with your supplier. Get that right and either style performs; get it wrong and neither does.

Then it's looks versus heat

With the fuel handled, the choice is the same one everyone faces. Vented logs give you the lazy, realistic yellow flame and send most of the heat up the flue — decorative-first. Ventless closes the damper and banks nearly all the warmth in the room, a real supplemental heater, as long as the room clears its Btu limit and you keep up the annual cleaning. In these newer Mills River developments, tighter construction means we watch for window condensation before recommending vent-free.
