Vented vs ventless gas logs — which should I buy?
In Swannanoa, a lot of these decisions are happening inside a rebuild — and that's an opening to do it right. In a home going back together, a sealed direct-vent unit or a well-sized ventless heater delivers real warmth for those cold, foggy valley mornings. Vented logs are the looks-first choice, and only if the original Grovemont chimney still drafts.
Rebuilding is the chance to get it right
Storm damage put a lot of Swannanoa homes back under construction, and with walls open the smart move is to spec the hearth properly instead of patching the old one. That usually means a sealed direct-vent fireplace: combustion is closed off from the room, it vents out a sidewall, and it heats efficiently — a clean upgrade over a 1940s Grovemont firebox that leaked heat. If you want the wood-fire look and the masonry chimney checks out, a vented set still fits; we inspect the flue before we commit to it.
The valley damp is hard on old chimneys
River-valley fog, cold-air pooling, and damp air have been working on Swannanoa's masonry chimneys for decades, and vented logs depend on that chimney sealing and drafting. Where the flue's degraded — and around here it often is — a vented set has to wait on a reline. Ventless removes the chimney from the picture and keeps all its heat in the room, genuinely helpful on a 20-degree valley morning, but it adds humidity to a house that's already damp, so we size it carefully or steer to a sealed unit.
Heat that outlasts the power
After days in the dark, plenty of neighbors want heat that doesn't depend on the grid. Gas logs on a millivolt valve light without electricity — but vented ones lose most of that heat up the chimney, so they're poor backup. Ventless and sealed direct-vent both keep it in the room.
