Vented vs ventless gas logs — which should I buy?
In Sylva, maintenance history drives the answer. The heavily used student rentals near WCU and the historic Dillsboro homes rarely get consistent service, and the Tuckasegee valley's river moisture rusts dampers and eats flue liners fast — so vented logs, which need a sound flue, often aren't the safe default. Ventless skips the chimney but demands the yearly cleaning that gets skipped here.
The neglected-flue reality
Cold-air drainage and river damp run hard through the Tuckasegee valley, and they're rough on chimneys — we find rusted dampers and degraded liners on Sylva and Dillsboro homes that look fine from the street. That's a problem for vented logs specifically, because a vented set is only as safe as the flue carrying its exhaust up and out. On a rental that's been run hard and inspected rarely, we won't drop a vented set over a questionable chimney; it gets relined first, or it doesn't happen.
Ventless trades one chore for another
Ventless removes the flue from the equation — damper closed, no chimney draft to worry about, all the heat in the room. But it swaps that for a stricter cleaning schedule, because everything that lands on the burner burns off into your air instead of up a flue, and vent-free carries firm room-size Btu limits and the bedroom-and-bath restriction that never bends. In inconsistently maintained rentals, that annual service tends to get missed — so if a unit won't be babied, a sealed direct-vent is the more forgiving, hands-off choice.
