Away from the university, rural Mars Hill leans on propane and wood, and each has a place in a basement. Cold corner, easy-use heat

Mars Hill runs cold, and the academic-year crowd tends to want the simplest thing that works — flip a switch, get heat, no tending a fire. In a below-grade room that argues for a sealed direct-vent gas unit, vented out a sidewall at the correct height above the ground; a buried wall limits where that goes, and a power-vent covers a longer run.
