Marshall's houses cling to steep grades, some stacked several stories against the hillside, and a basement dug into that slope may have very few walls that even reach daylight. Since a vent has to terminate outdoors at the right height above the ground, that geometry — not the heat load — often dictates the unit. Direct-vent gas is the flexible workhorse, and where the straight path is awkward, a power-vent can carry exhaust to wherever the wall opens up.

A wood stove is possible only if a full Class A chimney can rise cleanly to the roof.

Sizing a cold, damp gorge basement
