What size fireplace or stove do I need to heat a basement?
Out in Mills River, plan a basement heater around 20 BTU per square foot and add for the below-grade chill — roughly 30,000 to 40,000 BTU for a finished 1,000-foot space. The bigger local variable is fuel: on these large rural lots, many homes run propane rather than a gas main, which shapes the appliance and the setup more than the size does.
Propane country, done right
Between the farmland and forest out toward Horse Shoe and Banner Farm, propane is the norm, and an LP appliance runs different orifices and pressures than a natural-gas one — get that wrong and it burns sooty and inefficient. A Kozy Heat Springfield 36 is purpose-built for propane-country heat, and most Napoleon and Heat & Glo units convert to LP cleanly. We size the tank and regulator with your supplier and handle the piping and appliance side.
For a cold finished basement, that lands in the 30,000-to-40,000 BTU range, adjusted for ceiling height and exposed walls.
Venting a below-grade room on a big lot
A basement limits how an appliance vents — the exhaust has to leave the house at a proper height above the ground, and a partly buried wall narrows where that can happen. Direct-vent gas is the flexible default: sealed combustion out a sidewall, no chimney required. On a longer run a power-vent pushes exhaust to daylight, and a wood stove is on the table where a full Class A chimney can go straight up.
Extending that gas line is licensed work — we pull the Henderson County permit, pressure-test, and meet the inspector. We're 25 minutes south; call (828) 545-0525 for a free assessment.
Outage-proof heat, and outdoor fire too
Rural Mills River loses power in storms, so we favor propane gas with millivolt or battery-backup ignition, or wood, that heats the basement off the grid. And since this open valley is made for outdoor living, plenty of owners add a gas fire pit while the crew's already running propane. Ask about a free in-home assessment.
